Magazines Papers School Info Kits Toys Australian Solar Radiation Data Handbook Review 'The Australian Solar Radiation Data Handbook (ASRDH) is a useful tool when considering any designs related to solar energy, including passive solar buildings. The ASRDH provides a range of information including climatic conditions as well as a plethora of solar radiation data and statistics. Average values for global, direct and diffuse radiation are available for flat planes at any incline and orientation, for any hour of the year. Furthermore, equivalent data is available for planes that track the sun’s path throughout the year and for the solar energy entering through standard window glazing. There are more tables of data available in the ASRDH, all of which are useful material when considering designs and applications of the growing solar energy market.

After you overcome the acronyms and terms used throughout the ASRDH and grasp how to operate the accompanying program (AUSOLRAD which can be used to present the data in electronic form), the relevant information can be accessed and used in calculations for solar related designs and their financial evaluation. Another note about the handbook is that the radiation values that are produced are average values, i.e. They do not provide any values for the maximum and minimum radiation, except in the form of percentage of sequences of days below a given irradiation threshold. This minor shortcoming does not negate the value of the data provided, but rather it should simply be considered when used in the design phase.

This is the 4 th edition of the handbook that has been released. Although the old data was accurate for the time period at which it was produced (1986), the latest edition of the handbook has a longer period over which the data has been collected, superior accuracy for the instruments and an improved method of accounting for the actual cloud cover and in turn, the amount of beam radiation. The ASRDH also has radiation maps of Australia, which are especially useful for those visual learners out there. The Isorad maps display the seasonal variation in global radiation across Australia, with a detailed view of the 8 capital cities and their surrounding areas. Overall, the ASRDH is a very useful resource for any individual, business or institution that is interested in solar energy related enterprises.'
