Autotrol 460 Mp Manuals

My system is 17 years old and I noticed the brine tank is fuller now than it used to be. I did remove the brine tank several years ago and removed the salt chunks and cleaned it but otherwise have done no maintenance. I wonder if the brine is not flowing out properly or if it is not refilling the tank properly. What controls the brine in and out flow? Is it supposed to be entirely used up each regeneration? It seems to me that if it is not, it will gradually fill the brine tank as time goes on. I have read the manuals and it said to clean the brine injector yearly which I have not done!

Seems to me it could be clogged to where the brine is held back some during regeneration. The control monitors the flow and regenerates as it deems necessary electronically. The water appears soft enough but I just wonder about the brine tank getting fuller with time. The manual said to add 4 gallons when starting up the unit and that amount seemed to stay there after regeneration for years.

Now the brine tank has probably 10 to 15 gallons in it! Can someone educate me as to how this system works? The Autotrol valve is cam operated. As this cam rotates during regeneration it opens and closed different ports for each cycle.

Each of these ports have small O-Rings which seal them. These o-rings become worn and brittle over time. One of the first signs of this are what you have described, higher water in salt tank. This is due to insufficient vacuum being created in the brine draw cycle. At this point enough brine may be drawing still to regenerate the resin but this problem become worse until hard water bleeds from softener because of insufficient brining during brine draw cycle or hard water bleed between regenerations because of short brining. This is typically 15-20 years when this service issue arises with this valve. I would suggest a rebuild of the valve at this point.

Thanks for the inputs. I removed the salt tank and cleaned it out. It had fine salt packed in the bottom that might have been restricting the flow from the tank thru the pickup screen. I put in about 5 gallons of salt water and new salt pellets.

TC TIMER ASSEMBLYWe at Glass Water Systems have gotten quite a few calls about the Autotrol 2. Autotrol / Osmonics has discontinued the 4.

I am now watching the level to see if it continues to raise in operation. There are 3 settings on my electronic control. Hardness, capacity, and salt amount. It is set on 20 hardness, 24 capacity, and 10 lbs salt. I don't understand what the hardness and capacity settings mean. Do they just determine when it regenerates?

The salt setting indicates the amount of water the control puts in the salt tank to dissolve 10 lbs of salt. Apparently the brine cycle is designed to suck all the salt water out and your inputs indicate either the salt water is restricted out of the tank or at the injector or possibly the control o-rings are not providing enough vacuum during the brine cycle to empty the salt tank. I am beginning to understand the system.thanks for your help.

I will let you know if cleaning the salt tank solves the problem. The valve on your unit is a multi-port/multi-function valve.

During regeneration, the motor on the valve will rotate the valve's cam to open and close various ports. Each port controls a unique function on the valve. One of the last (or last) position the valve will be in prior to returning to service (treated water) is brine tank refill. The brine tank refill is controlled by the cam opening specific ports on the valve. When this occurs, water will flow through a brine line flow controller located on the side of the valve and then through the brine line tube to the brine tank. Most flow controllers for Autorol valve consist of a a female star nut that uses a rubber ball and specific slot size on the internal plastic part. It is possible that sediment or other build up is on this flow controller and water is flowing faster than designed.

The flow will continue for a timed period. The combination of a fixed flow rate and time will send a specific amount of water to your brine tank. In your case, 10 lbs of salt will require approx 3 -1/3 gallons of water to be sent to your brine tank.

Each gallon of water will dissolve approximately 3 lbs of salt. Since the electronic controller you have is normally accurate for time, the problem is most likely with the flow controller.

The other problem could be with the flapper that is used to fill water into the brine tank not fully closing. If this is the case, water will flow into the brine tank even after the brine fill cycle is completed. If this is the case, it is time to replace the flappers. They are sold as a complete set. The setting you asked about are as follows: Hardness - This is the measurement of your water quality in grains per gallon prior to going through the water softener.

This level should be tested to have it set correctly. If you are on a municipal water supply, they should be able to tell you their normal hardness level. If you are on a well, you should have your water tested to have the unit set properly. Capacity - This is the size of removal capability of the system. Based upon your other settings, I assume you have a 9' diameter tank that is 48' tall.

If so, your setting of 24 is correct. 24 actually means 24,000 grains will be removed per regeneration. Salt - You have this right - 10 means 10 lbs of salt should be used during each regeneration. Best of Luck, Dan GW Pumps and Purifcation 321-779-2837. Thanks Dan, you gave me the information I did not understand. Now I think I understand what the system is trying to do and can diagnose the problem if it continues after I cleaned the salt tank.

From your inputs and my settings, If my system capacity is 24000 grains and I am set to remove 24 grains per gallon, then the system should regenerate after the use of 1000 gallons. That makes sense.

As for the salt usage setting of 10 lbs, I guess that mixed with the 3.3 gallons of water provided will clean the mineral tank of hardness minerals. The tank supplier should provide the amount of salt to completely regenerate the mineral tank. Anyway you sound like you know this system well and I am thankful for your help.
